Paint Mines Trail is a 5. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from March until October. Easy to moderate trail with some inclines. Great views of the Paint Mines, prairie, and Pike's Peak. Can get muddy after rain, as the trail is a lot of clay.
Washouts often can be mistaken for trails. The full figure 8 trail is 4 miles, but shorter routes are possible. No dogs, horses, bicycles, or motorized vehicles permitted.
Gravel lot. Latrine at main lot. No running water. From Colorado Springs, take 24 to Calhan. Turn right on Yoder, then left on Paint Mine Road. This is a good trail, in the mines it isnt well marked but easy enough to figure out your way around. This place is beautiful and such a unique find for Colorado. The thing that ruined it for me was the people.
It was packed on a Saturday understandably so , but few people were wearing masks, and there was so many people showed blatant disrespect for the rules. We saw one person with dogs and lots of people climbing on the rocks. Very sad about the disrespect for maintaining the beautiful areas for others to enjoy in the future. Trailers name something else on Google I went thinking dogs would be allowed found out otherwise.
Great short hike. Perfect for family trips and just a quick getaway from the city. Trail in good conditions. Arrived at 7. As soon as I left it was packed around No dogs and bikes allowed, although I saw a group of people with 2 dogs which is unfortunately that people just decided to ignore the rules.
But other than that, I was a really nice and easy hike. Beautiful place. Super simple and easy to navigate. This is a great spot for pictures and families. You can make whatever route you want through the park, as there are plenty of trails and spurs. We ended up seeing almost every foot of trail, and took as maybe three hours took our time with a camera. Arrived at am and there were a few spots left. Many groups of up to 28 people we counted were starting to roll in.
Miserably crowded. We saw one other group with masks. Overall, minus the crowdedness, it's a 5-star hike as it's quite fun to poke in and out of all the caverns and slots be respectful please and don't stand on any fragile formations.
Definitely worth a drive from Denver. ALSO - a review below mentions needing a 4x4. Not sure where he went, you could get here from any direction with a 2WD sedan. First one there at started hiking it at night! Got there about minutes before sunrise and watch the colors unfold in front of my eyes! Awesome experience. I was the only one there before I had to catch my flight.
If you're a city boy like me It's damn pretty! No dogs, no bikes, no horses. Name is deceiving Spend your time on more fascinating trails. Really cool area.
